Description

The THOR Shadow SH20 is a dual-ear headset microphone designed for environments where audio quality and low visual profile both matter. It sits behind the neck with ear hooks on both sides, keeping the mic stable and in place even during active movement. The ultra-thin 0.7mm boom arm and tiny 3mm capsule housing make it one of the more discreet headset options at this price point, and the tan color blends naturally with lighter skin tones for on-camera and on-stage use.

Unlike single-ear headsets that can shift during use, the SH20's dual-ear design distributes the weight evenly and keeps the capsule positioned consistently near the corner of the mouth. This matters a lot in live environments where a microphone that drifts off-position mid-service or mid-presentation creates problems for the sound team. The headband rests on the back of the neck rather than over the top of the head, which makes it more comfortable for extended wear and nearly invisible from the front of the room or on camera.

The SH20 uses an omnidirectional polar pattern, which means it picks up sound evenly from all directions around the capsule. This is the standard choice for headset microphones because it allows for consistent capture regardless of small head movements. The frequency response runs from 40Hz to 20kHz, and the maximum SPL rating of 130.5dB means it can handle louder voices and high-energy environments without distorting.

One of the more practical features is the ReEx boom system. ReEx stands for retractable and extendable - you can slide the rear housing to shorten or lengthen the boom arm between 95mm and 117mm to get the right capsule position for different head sizes. The headset is also fully reversible, so it can be flipped to put the boom on either the left or right side of the face by pinching both ear pieces and rotating the frame. This makes it easier to share between users when needed, and eliminates the need to stock separate left-ear and right-ear versions.

THOR AV backs the SH20 with a one-year warranty on the microphone and cable. Refer to https://thorav.us/warranty/ if you have questions. The microphone is intended for indoor use only and should be stored in the included protective case when not in use.

Compatibility Guidance

If your wireless transmitter uses a different connector - such as a 3.5mm locking connector for Sennheiser, or a LEMO connector for some Shure and Lectrosonics - THOR AV offers the SH20 with a MicroDot cable and various MicroDot adapters, including TA4F, 3.5mm and LEMO. The MicroDot system allows the headset body to be used across multiple transmitter platforms by swapping the adapter, which can be a cost-effective approach for organizations that run mixed wireless systems or want flexibility for the future.

The SH20 is designed for use with wireless transmitter body packs and is not intended to connect directly to a mixer or audio interface without a wireless transmitter in the signal chain. The cable in the box terminates in a TA4F connector on the transmitter end, which is not a standard balanced XLR connection.

Setup Tips

  • Start with the headband at its smallest size: When fitting the SH20 for the first time, collapse the headband to its smallest setting and hook the ear pieces over the ears. Hold the bottom of the ear pieces behind the earlobes and tilt the head up and down to let the frame expand to the right size. The band should rest comfortably on the back of the neck - not on the top of the head.
  • Position the capsule near the corner of the mouth: The goal is to place the small capsule roughly one inch from the face, angled toward the corner of the mouth rather than pointed directly at the lips. This reduces plosive sounds (the pop from P and B sounds) and picks up the voice cleanly. Use the ReEx boom adjustment to dial in the right length, then gently shape the boom arm with smooth movements to get the angle right.
  • Dedicate one microphone per user when possible: THOR's own documentation notes that assigning one SH20 to a single user extends the life of the mic. Headsets that are frequently resized and reshared experience more wear on the boom and frame. If you need to share between users, adjust gently and avoid bending the boom sharply during transitions.
  • Use the cable clip to manage cable routing: Run the cable from the 90-degree connector along the ear and down the neck toward the transmitter pack. Use the included cable clip to secure the cable to clothing near the collar or lapel. This prevents the cable from tugging on the mic during movement and keeps it out of sight on camera.
