Heil Sound continues to listen to the artists and engineers that use their microphone products. The team at Heil listens both to field reports about how the microphones work, but also for improvements or product ideas the pros have as they travel the globe.
The PR 31 BW came as a result of a suggestion by Bob Workman (FOH Engineer for Charlie Daniels) who uses Heil microphones exclusively. Bob uses the Heil PR 30 for just about every application but found it too large physically to fit in and around the drum kit. As a result, Bob suggested that he might 'cut it in half'.
That is exactly what the guys in the Heil custom shop did and the PR 31 BW was born - a 4" PR 30 that exhibits all characteristics. Same great frequency response, same uniform front pattern and still with -40 dB of rear and side rejection – making it perfect for use as an UNDERHEAD microphone for cymbals.
Placing a microphone under the cymbals has rarely been successful because the microphone picks up everything around it. With the -40 dB of rear and side rejection, the PR31 BW picks up only what it's pointed towards – the cymbals and nothing from the toms or other sounds close by.
Using a right angle connector and our HH-1 rim mount, the PR 31BW is the perfect low profile answer for toms. The PR 31BW also works great in front of a guitar cabinet, brass and saxophones, inside a Leslie speaker and is perfect for acoustic pianos. It is a great go-to microphone for just about everything, including choir and vocals.
Heil Sound, Ltd. warrants all microphones to the original purchaser for a period of three years (parts) and ninety days (labor) from the date of purchase.
